Fatty acid-binding protein is a cytosolic protein with a low molecular weight of approximately 15,000 Dt, it is an important intracellular fatty acid carrier protein. Heart-type fatty acid-binding protein is mainly present in the heart, and its content in the myocardium is several times higher than in skeletal muscle. Plasma concentrations will increase within 3 hours after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) but will return to normal within 12 to 24 hours, making FABP a useful biochemical marker for early evaluation or exclusion of AMI.
